Name and the Goals of the Study Programme
The name of the Study programme is Specialization Degree in Methodology of Teaching Chemistry (1 year, 60 ECTS).
The aim of the study program is education of specialists in the field of chemical education. This program is annual, adapted to the needs of modern chemical education and in line with the policy of reforms of higher education in the Republic of Serbia. Student is required to obtain at least 60 ECTS per academic year (or 30 ECTS per semester), of which at least 40 ECTS (67%) through elective courses.
Type of the Study and the Outcome of the Education Process
Specialized academic studies.
The outcome of the learning process is an expert – a chemistry professor – a specialist. Within this program, students will specialize in theoretical and practical education for realization of teaching chemistry in elementary education and all levels and profiles of secondary education, in working on professional training and additional education in all forms of informal chemical education, in working in education and research institutions with legally prescribed occupations and for working in professional, development and supervisory educational services.
Professional Title, Academic, or Scientific Title
Upon completion of the study program, students acquire the professional title of professor of chemistry-specialist.
Admission Conditions
Completed Bachelor and Master studies in chemistry (total 300 ECTS, of which at least 30 ECTS from psychological, pedagogical and methodological disciplines and 6 ECTS in practice – school practice I at bachelor academic studies and/or school practice II at master academic studies of chemistry).
Position in the rankings within the approved student enrolment quotas.
The Structure of the Study Programme
The structure of the study program of specialist academic studies of teaching methodology includes the development of a specialist thesis (20 ECTS) and elective courses of 40 ECTS from the list of 27 optional subjects offered. The list of elective courses is given in Standard 5 (Table 5.3). All courses were classified into the following groups of courses:
- academic and general education courses 6.8%
- theoretical-methodological courses 10.2%
- scientific and professional courses 25.4%
- professional-applicative courses 57.6%
The Time Allotted for the Realization of Particular Study Forms
The studies are conducted through the course instruction, organized into semesters. Two semesters constitute one academic year.
Credit Values of Particular Courses
Specialized academic studies have at least 60 ECTS (lasting one academic year), with the previous total scope of studies of at least 300 ECTS at bachelor and master academic studies.
Diploma Work
The specialized studies of chemistry teaching methodology are finalized with drafting and defending the specialist thesis. Specification of specialist thesis is given in Tables. The thesis is the result of the independent student work representing the final exam before acquiring academic title of specialist of chemistry teaching methodology.
Prerequisites for the Registration for Particular Courses or Group of Courses
With the preparation and defence of the specialist thesis, the student demonstrates the autonomy and creativity in applying the acquired theoretical and practical knowledge. The ECTS value of a specialist thesis on specialist academic studies of methods of teaching chemistry is 20 ECTS.
Detailed provisions on the application, the conditions for the development and manner of defence of this thesis are determined by the Statute and the relevant regulations of the Faculty.
Way of Choosing Courses from the Other Study Programmes
In this study program the possibility of choosing courses is foreseen. The student may choose any course from the group of courses of the enrolled program of study. Registration of the elective courses is done, as a rule, at the enrolment. The teaching of given course will be organized, if the total number of students at the selected course is greater than the limit provided by the study programme from which the course is selected.
The student has the right to choose 20% of courses from other study programmes of the same level of study in the Department. The teaching of a given course will be organized, if the total number of students at the selected course is greater than the limit provided by the study programme from which the course is selected.
Transferring from Another Study Programme
For entry of individual courses or groups of courses there are special prerequisites, as defined in the curriculum. The requirements for transfer from other programmes of study in the same or similar fields are defined on the basis of current study programmes of the Faculty of Sciences in Novi Sad.
Interactive teaching methods are implemented and include: lectures, mentoring work, independent study of the students, auditory exercises, lab exercises, seminar papers, consultations.
The purpose of the study program of specialist academic studies of methodology of teaching chemistry is to educate students in the specialized manner in the field of chemical education. Academic chemical education within this study programme provides continuity in the development of professional education acquired in graduate academic (master) studies in chemistry. By studying research methodologies in chemistry teaching and a range of theoretical and methodological elective courses, students are introduced to professional research in the field of chemistry education.
The goal of the study programme of specialist academic study of chemistry teaching methodology is to improve chemical education, providing a narrow and specialized academic and theoretical – methodological education.
Academic chemical education provided by this study programme is in line with the latest scientific achievements of modern chemistry and is designed to encourage graduates to permanent improvement and further professional development.
By completing this program, the student acquires the following general abilities:
- ability of analysis, synthesis and prediction of consequences;
- the ability of critical thinking;
- the ability to solve specific problems by using scientific methods and procedures;
- the ability to apply knowledge in practice;
- communication skills and ability to cooperate with the narrow and broad social environment.
This study programme provides education of professionals with all the necessary competencies specific to modern chemical education. These specialists have developed the following competencies:
- for the implementation and development of professional skills and values: professional (in terms of chemical disciplines), pedagogical-psychological and methodological-didactic;
- planning and self-evaluation of professional development and advancement;
- for planning, programming and management of the chemistry teaching process;
- for designing a learning situation and creating a favourable atmosphere for learning;
- for the application of methods, procedures and techniques of professional support to chemical education;
- for functional use of information and communication technologies.
The professionals who complete this study programme are qualified for:
- working as teachers in the field of chemistry in primary and secondary education;
