Dr Mihajla Đan
Dr Mihajla Đan (born in Novi Sad, 1977) is Full Professor at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Novi Sad, specializing in Genetics. She earned her BSc degree in biology in 2000 from the same faculty and enrolled in master’s studies at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Biology, in the same year. She defended her master’s thesis in 2003 and completed her PhD in 2008 at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Novi Sad, earning the title of Doctor of Biological Sciences.
She has been employed at the Faculty of Science, University of Novi Sad, since 2001, and since 2018, she has Full Professor in Genetics. She teaches several courses in genetics at all levels of study and has mentored seven defended doctoral dissertations, six at the Faculty of Sciences and one at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Novi Sad. She is the author of two university textbooks, one practical manual, and one study guide.
Dr. Đan’s scientific work includes studying the variability of animal and plant genomes using molecular markers to assess genetic diversity and the structure of natural populations, addressing taxonomic and phylogeographic issues, and conservation genetics. She also focuses on analyzing gene polymorphisms and genotype-phenotype associations in complex human diseases. She has co-authored over 80 papers listed in SCI, with more than 1,000 citations and an h-index of 19. She has also presented at numerous national and international conferences.
She has participated in eight international projects, nine national projects funded by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technological Development of Serbia and the Science Fund (Ideas Program), one national project by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management of Serbia, two projects funded by Greek and Turkish government bodies, four national projects by the Provincial Secretariat for Science and Technological Development of Vojvodina, and six projects by the Provincial Secretariat for Agriculture, Water Management, and Forestry of Vojvodina. She was a participant and management committee member of two COST actions and a founding member of the International Lagomorph Genome Sequencing Consortium.
Dr. Đan received a Fulbright scholarship for the academic year 2019/20, which she completed at the University of Rhode Island, USA. She was also a recipient of a postdoctoral fellowship from the Ministry of Education and Science for training abroad at the Research Institute for Wildlife Ecology, Veterinary University of Vienna, Austria. She has conducted several study visits to the Veterinary University of Vienna, the University of Bologna, and the University of Porto.
She served as a member of the Presidency of the Serbian Genetic Society for two terms (2014–2019 and 2019–2024). She is also a member of the Serbian Biological Society, the Serbian Genetic Society, and the Scientific Society for Game Management. She speaks English and Russian, and has working knowledge of French and Italian.
