About the department

Department of Mathematics and Informatics was established in 1954 and has become one of the leading educational and research institutions ever since in the fields of mathematics and computer science. It has developed into a modern, European department recognised for its educational and scientific achievements of its professors, former students and students at all levels of studies including doctoral and post-doctoral levels.

The teaching process is carried out through 11 accredited study programmes at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels of academic study. In addition to regular study programme activities, the students at senior academic years have opportunities to pursue scientific and research work through student associations, as well as through participating in numerous national and international projects. As part of their regular study as well as through various extracurricular activities students can gain practical knowledge in important companies in the country and abroad.

At the Department, our employees participate in the implementation of a large number of scientific and educational projects, which are mainly of international character. These projects are primarily financed by current European Union programmes, but also from other funds, such as IPA Programmes of Cross-border Co-operation between Hungary and Serbia, as well as by programmes of bilateral and multilateral co-operation with several European countries (Germany, France, Slovenia, etc).

Numerous activities at the Department comprise organization of guest lectures of eminent international experts, organization of scientific conferences with an exceptional number of participants, study visits of our researchers at international universities, as well as the development of the Centre of Excellence. The Department participates in organised mobility programmes, such as BASILEUS, JOIN EU SEE, STEM, CEEPUS, DAAD, etc. Teaching staff and student exchanges are successfully implemented through co-operation agreements with the University Prince of Songkla from Thailand. The Department publishes its scientific magazine “Novi Sad Journal of Mathematics”.

Studies

The studies at the Department of Mathematics and Informatics are organised at all levels of university education:

Bachelor of Science Degrees

Mathematics (3 years, 180 ECTS)

Integrated Studies

Master of Science in Teaching Mathematics (5 years, 300 ECTS)

Master of Science Degrees

Applied Mathematics (2 years, 120 ECTS)

PhD Degrees

Doctoral School of Mathematics (3 years, 180 ECTS)

The Department also organises practical work for the students as part of their studies that is carried out at stock exchange, in banks and companies which require experts of such profiles.

Opportunities after graduation

Upon the completion of bachelor or master studies, a lot of employment opportunities open up for graduates. It is extremely rare for graduates of mathematics or informatics to be waiting for a job (they often start working during their studies or get internships thus raising their employment chances immediately after graduation). Depending on their final choice of the study programme, they can find jobs more easily in schools, at faculties, in scientific-research centres, at stock exchanges, in banks, insurance companies, administrative bodies, public opinion research agencies, in modern industry, software companies and many more.
