About the department

The Department of Biology and Ecology belongs to an educational and scientific institution (Faculty of Sciences) and its main activity is to educate experts in biology (research oriented professionals, as well as secondary and elementary school teachers) and ecology.

Considering the fact that biology makes a basic or complementary field of science in a large number of scientific research fields, it is extremely important to educate experts in biology and its specific sub-fields who can operate as unique technological units in research and development laboratories of various institutions as well as perform work as basic experts in this field.

The teaching process is conducted through lectures and practical classes in amphitheatres with modern equipment, classrooms suitable for practical work and laboratories. Our Department features a rich collection of plant and animal material available to students for educational and research purposes. A compulsory part of studying biology and ecology comprises field work when students collect plant and animal material and learn how to recognise and classify it in the process of creating their own collections.

The teaching and scientific staff of the Department participate in research projects at an international, national, and local level with basic and applied research being carried out in all biological disciplines.

As part of the co-operation between the University of Novi Sad and the University Prince of Songhkla, Hat Yai from Thailand, our Department of Biology and Ecology has established cooperation with their Department of Biology through the exchange of students and teaching staff, as well as through participation at joint research projects. Our Department has established similar co-operation with the International Sakharov Environmental University in Minsk, Belarus.

In addition to the above-mentioned international co-operation of our Department, University of Novi Sad participates in European scholarship programmes so our students also have access to European mobility programmes at all academic levels of study. Scholarship programmes of Erasmus Mundus and JoinEUSEE attract the highest interest. Through various programmes our students get an opportunity to attend specialised courses or gain scholarships from a large number of European universities with the unanimous support of the Department. Therefore, Europe has never been closer for prospective young and ambitious science professionals.

Our students are gathered within the Scientific and Research Society of Biology and Ecology Students “Josif Pančić“ which was established 30 years ago. Interested students are given an opportunity to learn about the principles and methods of scientific and research work within the Society, participate actively in scientific paper writing, implementing ideas and presenting the achieved results.
